How to Be "Sociable"
Hey Mom!
So this week someone at work said that I was "sociable" and "outgoing" and while I am not complaining about receiving a compliment, I definitely feel that this is not the most accurate description of my personality. Sure, I have an uncurbable enthusiasm than is ever-expanding like the universe itself but that is coupled with the attitude that people are generally exhausting.
HOWEVER! I've decided to really lean into this compliment because it's the time of year where you are surrounded by all your friends... and family... constantly. So at some point you will have to be outgoing and sociable when you don't want to be. Have no fear (and please don't strangle anyone with an ugly Christmas sweater)! I have compiled a list of things to do to trick people into thinking you are outgoing!
1. Smile - use a mirror to make sure you aren't just baring your teeth. If you think you may have a pained look in your eyes, just shut them and try to make the rest of your face look joyous.
2. Tell a joke - the best part is, if you reuse the same joke, people will eventually stop talking to you on their own.
3. Ask lots of questions - This requires the minimal amount of talking and makes other people feel like you really care.
4. Ya Mama - She just wants you to nod politely while she brags about you to her friends.
5. Caffeinate! Listen, how are you going to embrace the jolliness of the season without a raging caffeine banshee using your heart as a speed bag?
Bonus: You'll have to pee a lot so you'll get a ton of mini breaks from people while you use the rest room.
6. Be polite - most people mistake common human decency for approachability these days, use this to your advantage.
7. Bring snacks - offering people food will make them forget that you're there and focus more on the carb-filled delight you've shoved into their field of view.
8. Talk about a current event - Nothing brings people together like being disgusted about the latest sports-match or politician being political.
9. Only play party games you are horrible at - people want to be able to feel good about themselves and somebody has to lose, that might as well be you since you're internally miserable anyway.
10. Hide until you hear peals of laughter - then walk into the room and laugh really loudly so that everyone's memory of you will be you at the centre of things laughing merrily in merriment.
Every one of us can be sociable and outgoing, but this holiday season remember that it's what's in your heart that really matters. No seriously, we're going to be eating a lot in the next couple weeks and we really need to consider how that will affect our cardiac health ---> Just kidding that's what New Year's Resolutions are for!
That is all.
